TO THE EDITOR:
With respect, it's obvious that in 30 years, almost all cars will be electric, drive themselves and won't crash ("EV fever: I just don't get it," Keith Crain, March 11). Maybe in 20, or 10? Remember life before iPhones? Me neither, but that was a scant 12 years ago. The traffic jam, fender bender and tragic call to a loved one about a fatal DUI crash will be things of the past.
This shift will come to pass whether we agree with it or not. If it doesn't fit our current business models, the wheels of progress won't care as they roll over us. Even if we won't live to see it, our children will. Whether they will be the beneficiaries or the victims of this phenomenon remains to be seen, and their fate is in some part up to the current generation.
So with the perspective of "it's not 'if' but 'when'" the shift to electric and autonomous takes place, the race to get on the electric bus is not about politics or an environmental worldview. For those of us with family businesses like mine and the dealerships we do work for, the next few years will be about survival and leaving a legacy to our children.
