The farmers have demanded the Tamilnadu Government to procure the turmeric from the turmeric farmers at ₹12,000 a quintal immediately.
Swathantira Raju, President, Tamilnadu State Small and Marginal Farmers Association in a statement on Saturday night demanded the Tamilnadu Government to procure all the turmeric possessing by the Turmeric farmers at ₹12,000 a quintal. He said Erode, Salem, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts are noted for turmeric cultivation and production. But this year for want of proper seasonal rain and depleting of ground water level the standing turmeric have started withering.
Further at present the cultivable cost has been escalated to ₹1.50 lakh an acre and also the harvesting cost has increased many fold. Under such circumstances the turmeric is selling at ₹5,000 to ₹7,000 a quintal in all the markets at Erode. Because of this the turmeric growers are suffering financially. So he demanded the Government to procure all the turmeric from farmers at ₹12,000 a quintal.
He also appealed the Government to waive all their agricultural and jewel loans borrowed from Cooperatives ad Nationalised Banks.
