Mid-Engine Corvette C8 Sounds Whisper Quiet During Recent Detroit Tests

As every day goes by, we slowly inch towards the inevitable premiere of the 2020 Chevrolet C8 Corvette. We don’t yet have confirmation as to when the vehicle will debut but consistent sightings of prototypes across the United States are keeping us on the edges of our collective seats.

Most recently, a disguised C8 Corvette was spied undergoing testing in rainy Detroit by a reader from Autoweek. Despite the full-body camouflage wrap hiding much of the American supercar’s design, we are provided with a better glimpse of the vehicle than those prototypes covered in thick body cladding.

Chevrolet has a lot of pressure on it to make the C8 Corvette special

Perhaps the most obvious thing that stands out with this particular C8 Corvette prototype is the bold character lines running horizontally along the doors from the front wheel arches through to an air intake on either side. There’s also a sharp line stretching from the intake to the rear wheel as well as a character line that makes its way over the rear wheel arch and ends at the decklid.

Something else we’ve taken away from these two short clips is just how quiet the C8 Corvette can be. Admittedly, the sounds of cars driving over rain-soaked roads drowns out most of the Corvette’s engine and exhaust notes but even still, it seems apparent that just like the C7, certain driving modes available in the C8 Corvette will make it well suited to daily driving and long road trips.

Keeping true with Corvette models to come before it, the C8 will be sold exclusively with V8 engines. Among these are expected to be a naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8, a naturally-aspirated 5.5-liter V8, and a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8.
