Hiccups may force Congress, JD(S) to redistribute key seats

BENGALURU: The Congress and JD(S) are likely to rework its seat-sharing arrangement following growing resentment in the Congress for ceding Uttara Kannada, Tumakuru and Udupi-Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha seats to the regional party. Leaders of both parties on Sunday hinted at a possible change in constituencies allotted to the JD(S).
Ever since the alliance announced its deal, Congress workers have been fuming as they believe the BJP will have a cakewalk in these three segments since JD(S) lacks organisational strength. Sources say talks have begun between the parties to redistribute seats.
JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda told reporters in Shivamogga that the party may give the Uttara Kannada seat to the Congress. "Revenue minister RV Deshpande discussed the proposal in the morning," Gowda said. "We have not taken a decision yet, but we want to defeat communal forces in the state."
Congress steps up efforts to get Tumakuru seat back
Former minister Pramod Madhwaraj spoke to CM HD Kumaraswamy and apprised him about the necessity of fielding a Congress candidate in Udupi-Chikkamagaluru, a bastion of the BJP.
“I spoke to Kumaraswamy on Saturday and he said a final decision will be made after taking everybody into confidence,” Madhwaraj told TOI.
The Congress also stepped up its efforts to get back Tumakuru, which triggered the resentment in the party since it holds the seat. Deputy chief minister G Parameshwara and KPCC president Dinesh Gundurao held a meeting in this regard on Sunday. Parameshwara, sources say, is upset with the decision to part with Tumakuru and has been in touch with Delhi to get the seat back. He believes former CM Siddaramaiah was responsible for JD(S) bagging Tumakuru.
Siddaramaiah said he had asked party bosses not to cede Tumakuru to the JD(S). “Giving tickets to sitting MPs and denying only one is unfair,” he said, adding efforts are being made to ensure justice to SP Mudduhanumegowda, the sitting MP. “I had told the party high command this.”
Siddaramaiah also held talks with Mysuru district Congress leaders, including elected representatives, to take stock of the situation in Mysuru Lok Sabha seat. Sources in Congress do not rule out the possibility of JD(S) getting Mysuru in lieu of Tumakuru.
Suspense over Gowda’s contest
JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda on Sunday declined to reveal from which seat he would contest.
“Why are you so much interested in my contesting,” he told reporters in Shivamogga.
