42-year-old criminal case settled in Natl Lok Adalat

Nagpur: As many as 2,725 cases, including a criminal case which was impending since last 42 years were settled in the National Lok Adalat on Sunday.
The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of Nagpur under the aegis of Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority, Mumbai, held the National Lok Adalat 2019, which was presided over by judge in-charge of district and sessions court Vibha Ingle. As many as 62 panels from the Nagpur district, consisting of one judge, one lawyer and one social activist each, looked after the running of the court. The Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court formed three panels under the observation of Justice Rohit Deo, Justice Manish Pitale and Justice (retd) SR Dongaonkar.

The settled cases include 1,218 civil, criminal and land acquisition cases, 600 vehicular, 49 matrimonial and 907 other miscellaneous cases. The settlement revenue thus generated was Rs15.48 crore, including Rs6.98 crore from motor vehicle claims and Rs2.53 crore from cheque bounce cases.

Vijay Sahu’s case against Ramesh Kalam was settled with mutual understanding as the former withdrew the case. The case had been pending in the court for 42 years. Sahu had gone to the employment karyalaya in order to retrieve his card. Kalam tried to distract him by striking a conversation and meanwhile stole Sahu's watch. Sahu dropped all charges and thus, the case was amicably settled by judicial magistrate Shehzad Parvez.


A criminal case against Pandurang, pending for 38 years, was settled with mutual understanding. Pandurang had rented a cycle from the petitioner, SS Patil. Without letting Patil know, Pandurang sold the bicycle to someone else and betrayed his trust. Since Patil passed away, his daughter settled the case amicably.


Another Lok Adalat was held by the Family Court where 82 cases were listed, out of which 23 litigants were present and 8 couples were reunited. It was held under the supervision of principal judge MM Thakre. Three panels consisting of eminent personalities like judges PK Agnihotri, TG Mitkari, VG Raghuvanshi, advocate VS Deshpande and advocate A Khanam among others settled the cases.
