Thiruvananthapuram: State human rights commission has ordered to evict all unauthorised vendors from Chalai bazaar. Justice Antony Dominic, chairman of human rights commission issued the order based on a complaint filed by Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi (VVES), Chalai main unit. The complaint said that the shops at Chalai had run out of business owing to unauthorized parking and illegal shops functioning in the area. The commission has sought a report from corporation secretary following the complaint filed by the representative of VVES, Chalai unit.

As per the report submitted by corporation secretary, around 25 unauthorized bunk shops function on the 300m stretch of Gandhi Park to Chalai road. The people who run bunk shops are a nuisance for those who conduct business legally. Besides, the presence of such shops impeded pedestrian movement and smooth passage of motorists. The report notes that the unauthorized owners of bunk shops are united and that they enjoy good support from political parties. The report has called for a unified action by the corporation and police to evict illegal vendors. The corporation secretary has also pointed out in the report that unauthorized shops pose a hindrance to the execution of redevelopment of Chalai under smart city project, which is being done in convergence with heritage scheme.
