Palladam MLA inspects development work, violates model code of conduct
TNN | Mar 19, 2019, 04:56 ISTTirupur: In violation of model code of conduct, Palladam AIADMK MLA A Natarajan had inspected various development work carried out in his constituency, alleged opposition parties. They raised the issue at the all-party meeting organized by the district administration at the collectorate in the city on Monday.
The meeting was chaired by district revenue officer (DRO) R Sukumar. Raising the issue at the meeting, CPM Tirupur district executive member N Gopalakrishnan said, “While the MCC is in place, AIADMK MLA Natarajan inspected government projects in clear violation of rules on March 14.”
Showing photographic evidence before the DRO, Gopalakrishnan said, “The MLA was accompanied by few officials of Palladam municipality. They had visited storm water drainage work being carried out in ward 4. Besides, they had also inspected new building construction work at Palladam government arts college and Mettupalayam integrated drinking water scheme work. Even as the news about the violation was circulated on social media, the district election authorities have not acted, so far.”
The DRO replied, “We have not received any such complaint. But, it will now be forwarded to the election authorities.”
When contacted, Palladam assistant returning officer Murugan said, “We were told about the alleged violation, but it was not true that the municipality officials were present with the MLA.”
Natarajan said, “I did not intentionally visit the developmental works. I inspected them as I went through that way. Hereafter, I would not visit the work.”
The opposition parties said since the violation was not taken up seriously, they would lodge a complaint before the state chief election officer.
Meanwhile, AIADMK Tirupur candidate MSM Anandan garlanded the statue of his party founder and former chief minister MG Ramachandran on Park Road on Monday evening. The district election authorities failed to ensure that fingers of the statue, which symbolically indicates two leaves symbol of the Dravidian major party, were covered as per the model code of conduct.
