PATNA: National Institute of Technology-Patna (NIT-P) has decided a 10% increase in the enrolment of students from economically weaker sections of general unreserved category from the academic session 2019-20.

As per the new reservation policy, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has asked all the central educational institutes to increase 25% seats to accommodate students of economically weaker sections in the unreserved category under 10% reservation for them by 2020.

NIT-P director P K Jain told this newspaper that they were yet to decide the allotment of seats in each undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses run by the institute. “We will publish the details on the institute’s official website once it has been finalized,” Jain said and added, “plans are also afoot to increase 15% seats the following year.”

Altogether 1,210 students are currently enrolled in NIT-P and 800 of them are studying in BTech, 350 in MTech and 60 in PhD programmes.

The institute has 10 departments — civil engineering, electrical engineering, computer science and engineering, electronics and communication, mechanical engineering, department of architecture, humanities and social sciences, physics, chemistry, and mathematics.

NIT-P dean (student welfare) Prakash Chandra said the increase in seats would be done according to the space in each classroom and availability of rooms in the hostel. “It will be a problem for us to accommodate all the students in one class. Therefore, we have decided to divide the batches into two parts from next year,” he said.
