NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old woman was strangled to death by her boyfriend in northeast Delhi's Sonia Vihar on Saturday night. The accused was arrested from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

Confirming the developments, DCP (northeast) Atul Kumar Thakur said the accused was identified as Suraj and a case of murder was registered. Further probe was being conducted, he said.

Cops said that they were alerted about the murder at 4am on Sunday when the woman's friend went to Suraj's room to check on her and found her lying unconscious.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Subsequently, the victim's friends were questioned and it was found that the room belonged to Suraj.

Investigating officers found that the suspect and the woman were in a relationship and were planning to get married. However, lately there was some tension among them following which the woman had stopped meeting Suraj. On Saturday, after a lot of pestering, she agreed to meet him and went to his room in Sonia Vihar, police said.

However, an argument ensued and took an ugly turn as Suraj strangled her in a fit of rage. He then locked his room and boarded a bus for Amethi.

Later, the woman's friend discovered the body and alerted the cops who solved the case after tracing the suspect's mobile phone location.
