Goa assembly speaker Pramod Sawant to succeed Manohar Parrikar as chief minister

Goa Assembly Speaker Pramod Sawant has been chosen as the new chief minister, sources said Monday.

The official announcement is expected anytime soon.

Earlier, Manohar Parrikar was cremated with full state honours at the Miramar beach in Panaji.

Sources say MGP's Sudhin Dhavalikar has been offered Deputy CM, but his two MLAs weren't yet signing because they wanted three corporations and three berths.

The BJP had been trying to thrash out a consensus among it allies on the choice of the chief minister candidate. The BJP earlier said that it had zeroed in on the next CM candidate but its allies in the state were yet to get on board.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari, however, did not reveal who the BJP had chosen.

BJP has been conducting a series of meetings with its alliance partners since late Sunday night to reach a consensus on Parrikar's successor.

BJP is in an alliance with the Goa Forward Party and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party who have three MLAs each and three Independents.
