RTI commissioner summons MMCRI officials

Mysuru: Not taking kindly to Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute’s (MMCRI) refusal to furnish information sought under the Right To Information (RTI) Act by an applicant, the Karnataka Information Commission (KIC) on Saturday has asked the institution’s public information officer to appear for a hearing on April 5.
In a recent order issued by RTI commissioner NP Ramesh, a copy of which is with STOI, dubbed MMCRI’s response to applicant Komala Devi’s request for closed circuit television (CCTV) camera footage for two specific days – MMCRI told the applicant that the footage was missing – ‘preposterous’ and ‘suspicious’.
Ramesh said that the express purpose behind installing CCTV cameras was to usher in transparency in administration, and said that the apathetic attitude of the MMCRI officials to repair defunct CCTV cameras defeated the purpose of the RTI Act.
Komala Devi, a resident of Agrahara had demanded CCTV footage for February 23, 2018 and June 4, 2018 from MMCRI. Failure of the medical institution to furnish the required footage within the stipulated period of time prompted Komala Devi to approach the KIC.
The KIC subsequently issued a notice to MMCRI demanding an explanation for the delay. In its reply, MMCRI stated that footage for the two days was not available, besides adding that CCTV cameras were not installed in the director’s chamber. None too pleased with the response, Ramesh asked the MMCRI authorities to get the dysfunctional cameras fixed.
Despite STOI’s repeated attempts to contact him, MMCRI dean Dr CP Nanjaraj did not respond.
