PUNE: A man was booked on Friday for allegedly cheating a 23-year-old youth from Ghorpade Peth to the tune of Rs31,000 by promising to sell puppies to him.
The cheating incident occurred in December last year.
The man realized he had been cheated after he waited for two months and did not receive the puppies. He then approached the police to lodge a complaint against the offender.
An officer from the Khadak police said the complainant, Omkar Kishor Dhole, loves dogs and wanted a labrador dog breed for himself.
Dhole looked online for the breed. He came across an advertisement on an e-commerce website. The advertiser on the website stated he wanted to sell five puppies collectively worth Rs31,000.
The advertisement also had pictures of the puppies. Trusting the content, Dholi contacted the number mentioned on the website.
However, the man who posed as the owner of the puppies, asked Dhole to deposit the money in his account first. As directed, Dhole deposited the money.
But after receiving the money, the man switched off the cellphone.
Dhole repeatedly attempted to establish contact with the man. The Khadak police booked the suspect under the Information Technology Act and section 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code.
