The Matunga police arrested a 54-year-old man on Sunday for allegedly creating a fake e-mail address of a minister to cheat an environmental consultant to the tune of Rs 1.5 lakh by promising him a contract under a government scheme.

The accused, Jyotikumar Agarwal had emailed himself from the fake address and then forwarded the e-mail to the complainant Manish Patel, 54, to show he was in touch with the minister. Agarwal had also shown Patel a fake bank message stating he had transferred Rs 1.75 lakh to the minister. When Patel realised he had been cheated, he had approached the minister’s office, who then informed Matunga police.
