LUCKNOW: Turning a deaf ear to the March 15 deadline set by National Green Tribunal (NGT), Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is yet to ensure that garbage collected from the city ends up in the Shivri solid waste management plant and instead is letting it pile up on roadside.

On December 24, the NGT appointed UP Solid Waste Management Monitoring Committee (UPSWMMC) directed LMC to remove garbage piles from across the city by January 10. The deadline was extended to February 14 and later to March 15. In its third warning on February 27, UPSWNNC also warned of a fine if LMC refused to do its job.

The municipal corporation had then directed its zonal officers to ensure garbage collected from roadside was shifted to the solid waste management plant in Shivri within an hour of collection at temporary transfer stations.

LMC had also warned its staff with suspension if they failed to carry out the orders.

An UPSWMMC official, said, “We will launch an inspection drive in the city after Holi holidays. If we find garbage piled up on the roads, we would recommend NGT to take action against LMC.” LMC additional commissioner, Amit Kumar, said, “We are conducting inspection drives daily. After anomalies were found in zone 2, 6 and 7 on Friday, two LMC officials were suspended and a day’s salary was deducted of four.”

However, a reality check by TOI showed that the corporation was yet to learn a lesson.

Unsatisfied with LMC’s efforts, local residents said that they wanted results. New Hyderabad resident, Bipul Sonker, said, “Everyday LMC vehicles dump garbage here after collecting it from adjoining areas. Only a part of it is shifted to the Shivri plant, while rest is left to rot in open.”

In Rakabganj, Zeeshan Siddiqui said there has been no change in the situation even after the repeated warnings from NGT.
