Nagpur: Buckling under pressure, Nagpur University (NU) has agreed to “remove” name of its former head of postgraduate English department Shoma Sen from its annual report, placed before the Senate last week, even though the opponents had only called for “modifying the record”.
Sen was suspended by the NU after she was arrested with four others over their alleged involvement in Koregaon-Bhima violence on June 6 last year. Two days later, she was suspended by NU as per norms. Sen, who is lodged in Pune jail, superannuated under suspension on June 30.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) senate member Vishnu Changde had objected to the mention that she was head of the NU English department till June 30, 2018. Changde demanded the NU must only consider her tenure till the day she was arrested.
NU’s annual report shows her to be head of NU's English department till June 30, 2018.
In the Senate meeting on March 14, NU brass was caught off guard when Changde raised the issue. Vice-chancellor SP Kane and acting registrar Neeraj Khaty were not even aware of the dates Sen was arrested and subsequently suspended by the administration.
When Changde asked them check records, Kane and Khaty agreed to remove Sen’s name from the report. Kane and Khaty didn’t answer TOI’s calls and SMSes.
Talking to TOI, Changde said the duration of annual report is July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. “She (Sen) was suspended over serious charges before June 30. We demanded that facts shouldn’t be misrepresented and proper dates must be mentioned. We don’t intend to malign anyone. We don’t want the reason to be stated,” he said.
Senate members from other groups too said the demand was not for removal of name but that her tenure be mentioned only till the date she was suspended.
NUTA’s Senate member Ajiet Jachak said, “The university can’t remove the name. She was the head is a fact. It was decided to tenure would be till she was the suspended.” Vidyarthi Sangram Parishad’s Senate member Manmohan Bajpai also said no decision to delete the name was taken.
Padvidhar Mahasangh senate member Sarita Nimbarte said it was wrong to remove her name. “It would amount to tampering with records,” she said.
Meanwhile, Changde also opposed the use of word 'attack' for the February 9 vandalism by ABVP activist on NU’s main building in the Q&A booklet. The VC agreed to change it to 'protest' though an FIR has been filed for damaging public property.
