Cop-criminal link suspected behind informer beating
Soumitra Bose | tnn | Mar 18, 2019, 04:00 ISTNagpur: The case of a police informer Ashish Gayki being abducted and thrashed by bookie-turned-narcotics peddler Madhu Singhal (Agrawal) last week, seems to have exposed an unhealthy competition among two units of crime branch’s special cell dealing with cases of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The case is also now set to bring to fore police-criminal nexus.
Around a month ago, the nexus between police and criminals came to fore after the arrest of Feroze Khan alias Abu, considered a mastermind of narcotics Mephedrone (MD) powder supply chain. The cell phone records of Abu had revealed his regular communication with several cops. Following a report from the crime branch, four officers and two constables were suspended while another two shifted to police headquarters.
In the latest case of thrashing and threatening Gayki at gunpoint, Zone IV DCP Raj Tilak Roushan did not rule out another inquiry into suspected police-criminal nexus. “We are probing the suspected links through communication analysis. No one would be spared. If required, we may start an inquiry against the concerned persons too if their involvement comes to fore,” he said.
Gayki and cops from special cell against narcotics under PI Raju Bahadure were zeroing in upon MD dealer Agrawal. As the trap was being laid, Agrawal got a call on his cell phone from a cop from another unit of crime branch that deals in the narcotics. The cop is learnt to have alerted Agrawal he was being trapped by Gayki as the person accompanying him was a police personnel. Sources claimed Gayki used to act as informer for the other cop too who betrayed him this time for rendering support to a rival.
