NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday renamed his Twitter name to "Chowkidar Narendra Modi" in a bid to amplify the BJP's campaign ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

BJP and Congress fight over chowkidar-chor slogans on Twitter

PM Modi appealed to people asking them to take a pledge against corruption and social evils. Rahul Gandhi also took to Twitter to respond to Modi’s campaign, asking if the Prime Minister was “feeling a little guilty today.” By 7pm, there were 4,50,000 tweets with the hashtag, and several users tweeted that they got a personalised reply from the PM’s handle.

BJP president Amit Shah also followed the PM to rename his Twitter handle to "Chowkidar Amit Shah".

Following the footsteps of their leaders, Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Jagat Prakash Nadda, Harsh Vardhan and Dharmendra Pradhan added the prefix "Chowkidar" to their Twitter accounts.

This renaming of Twitter accounts came a day after PM Modi launched a campaign “Main bhi chowkidar hoon” with a tweet, “Your Chowkidar is standing firm & serving the nation”.

The BJP leaders also put out short advertisement videos showing that people from different walks of life have turned 'chowkidar' (watchman) to do their bit for the country like Modi.

Shah tweeted a campaign video to highlight people's efforts to keep their surroundings clean.

The origin of the word 'chowkidar' dates back to the poll campaigning ahead of the 2014 general elections when Modi had promised to work as a 'chowkidar' to guard the people's money and their trust once elected to the top office.

'Main Bhi Chowkidar' has been started after extensive surveys and data analysis by BJP strategists who feel that Congress president Rahul Gandhi's 'chowkidar chor hai' jibe and campaign is not resonating among people. The surveys also suggested that it is actually angering people in the country, according to a release.

‘Chowkidar’ key to BJP’s campaign

PM Modi launched a campaign “Main bhi chowkidar hoon” with a tweet, “Your Chowkidar is standing firm & serving the nation”. The hashtag #MainBhiChowkidar trended through the day with a large number of BJP supporters associating with the campaign. Modi in the tweet said he is not the only person serving the nation and every one who does so is a 'chowkidar'.

Modi, in the tweet on Saturday, said he is not the only person serving the nation and every one who does so is a 'chowkidar'. “Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar. Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a chowkidar. Today, every Indian is saying-#MainBhiChowkidar," wrote the PM.

Under the aegis of this campaign, the BJP has leveraged a tech innovation called conversation cards on Twitter, whereby people will get a personalised message from the Prime Minister on Twitter on participating in this campaign.
