NEW DELHI: For residents of Kirari in outer Delhi, Raj Kumar was a driver who would also work at a nearby gym. But to outsiders he would introduce himself as ACP Raj Malhotra, an IPS officer posted with the north district of Delhi Police.

Kumar would drive around in a khaki uniform with side badges and insignia to dupe people. His crime run ended on Friday when the real cops came knocking at his door following a complaint from a woman. DCP (Rohini) SD Mishra said that Kumar has been booked under IPC sections 419, 420, 354 and 506.

The woman complained to police that the Kumar had duped her by promising marriage and a government job. She met the man a few months ago in a gym in Aman Vihar where he introduced himself ACP Raj Malhotra. He told her that he lived with his parents and an adopted daughter. He claimed that he had been diagnosed with cancer and would marry her as soon as his treatment was over.

The accused took Rs 1 lakh from the woman for getting her a government job. However, when he started stalling, she checked his background and found that he was not a cop and lived in a small room in Kirari. When the woman started ignoring Kumar, he became violent and started threatening her.

He even went to her office and when he was stopped by the security guards, he allegedly threatened to get them arrested and shut down the office. However, the real cops arrived by then and they noticed that though he claimed to be an ACP, his shoulder badges were of a DCP-rank officer. He was then taken into custody.

A probe revealed that Kumar was arrested in 2013 for heckling a constable in Rohini who had stopped his car for checking. He had then introduced himself as a sub-inspector. The area SHO found the ID fake and arrested him.
