The State unit of the BJP has requested the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to appoint special observers at mosques to prevent any attempt to influence voters on “religious lines” during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In a letter to the Delhi CEO, the Delhi BJP’s legal department convener Neeraj cited alleged attempts by some Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, including AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, to “polarise voters on caste and religious lines” requesting that the appointment of special observers at mosques be undertaken.

“We are bound to write to you this complaint due to recent repeated attempts to polarise voters on religious lines by the AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal and his party members,” Mr. Neeraj alleged.

Mr. Kejriwal, while addressing gatherings in minority-dominated areas, has been asking attendees to be wary of the split of votes between AAP and the Congress and vote for his party to defeat the BJP.

“He has been giving baseless statements to polarise the voters in Muslim-dominated areas,” Mr. Neeraj said adding that the Delhi CEO had been requested to appoint special observers for mosques in Muslim-dominated areas so that the political and religious leaders cannot spread “hate” among people to “influence” elections.

“If any violation takes place, based on the reports of the special observers, the Election Commission can take immediate cognisance of it and initiate necessary action,” Mr. Neeraj said further.

“We would welcome all steps by the Election Commission to prevent any communal unrest. However, observers should be appointed to RSS shakhas and meeting where communally charged discussions are prevelant,” said AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj.
