EC hammer falls on arms, hoardings

NEW DELHI: Intensifying its drive to implement the model code of conduct in the capital, the office of the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Delhi has removed a large number of hoardings, banners and posters with images of political leaders, recovered thousands of liquor bottles, and seized a large number of fire arms.

The CEO office has also registered FIRs against two political parties and 137 individuals. The office has also arrested 138 people under the excise act and booked more than 7,000 as preventive measure under the CrPC Act.


The officials from the CEO office in a press conference, said it has lodged two FIRs/DD entries against political parties, one each against the AAP and the BJP for violating the provisions of the model code of conduct, an official said.


The model code of conduct came in to effect with the announcement of the schedule of polls by Election Commission on Sunday. The voting in Delhi will take place on May 12.


The officials also said more than 63,449 public hoardings, banners and posters carrying images of party leaders and political references had been removed from public places.
