KOLKATA: More than 25 shanties, located by the side of the Bally Bridge near Dakshineswar temple were completely gutted after one of the hutments caught fire on Saturday evening. The fire was finally brought under control by 11pm.
According to locals, the shanties had come up near the Bally bridge over past several years. Most of the residents were engaged in odd-jobs in the area. One of the locals said that the fire was first spotted around 8pm. Although they tried to douse the fire by spraying water from nearby taps, the fire had spread fast. All of the shanties caught fire in next 30 minutes.
Five fire tenders were pressed into service initially, but the fire could not be controlled. Three more fire tenders were sent to the spot by 9.30 pm. While the firemen struggled to douse the fire, it could finally be brought under control by 11 pm. While the cause of fire is yet to be determined, some of the locals claimed that it could have been caused from a stove being used in one of the shanties. Traffic movement through the area—which joins Dunlop with Bally was disrupted. No casualty was reported.
