Nagpur: The decision of a 30-year-old woman to return to her alcoholic husband’s place just to ensure her son appeared for the final examination proved fatal. She was allegedly bludgeoned to death by her husband on Friday midnight just two days before the examination.
Ambazari police, led by senior PI Sunil Chavan, arrested the accused, Deva, for killing wife, Bhavna Rambhaji, by hitting her with a frying pan at their rented room at Jai Nagar (Pandhrabodhi). Deva is involved in the business of selling fried fish.
Bhavna had left for her mother’s place in Balaghat towards the end of last year after being repeatedly harassed by Deva but decided to return for son’s education against advise of relatives.
Deva also remained hostile to Bhavna’s son Abhay, who is from her first marriage. His relatives now have no option but to take him with them to Balaghat where Bhavna’s widow mother Kantabai resided.
Unconfirmed sources said that it was Deva’s second murder as he had earlier killed his first wife too in Chandrapur. In 2016, Deva was also charged with assaulting Bhavna with a knife and battering her head with a cooker, police said, adding an offence of attempt to life was also registered against him at Ambazari police station.
“But due to Bhavna’s request, Deva was released. Her efforts to give Deva a chance to mend his ways went in vein as he continued to mentally and physically torture her under the influence of alcohol,” police said.
According to police, Deva married Bhavna, who after losing her first husband shifted to the city from Balaghat, around a decade ago after meeting her for the first time at her maternal uncle’s place and started torturing her soon after the marriage. He always used to raise question on Bhavna’s character and pick up fights over one or the other issues.
On Friday, Abhay said his stepfather as usual picked up a fight with her mother. “In the evening, father was upset after meeting with a small accident where he lost his fried fishes. He returned home in angry mood and started quarrelling with mother,” Abhay said, who went outside after bickering started.
