A flying squad on Friday seized ₹3.12 lakh from a car at Pakkam near Gudiyatham. Disclosing the seizure to the media, police officials said that they have been conducting vehicle checks across the district to track movement of cash, gift items meant for distribution to voters. An officer said the squad while conducting a vehicle check at Pakkam, intercepted a car and found cash, which was transported without supporting documents.
Strict instructions had been given to banks not to issue loans to women self-help groups till the elections are over. The occupants of the car claimed that they were carrying the money to settle their dues. However, they were not able to produce valid supporting documents which led to the seizure.
The amount was handed over to Assistant Election Officer’s office at Gudiyatham and the owners have been advised to produce relevant documents to get the money released.
