NEW DELHI: The
hashtag 'Main Bhi Chowkidar' by the ruling BJP
+ became the world's top trend on Twitter on Saturday, even as Congress tried to capture the digital space by tweeting #ChowkidarChorHai, a slogan popularised by its president Rahul Gandhi.
PM Narendra Modi today appealed to people asking them to take a pledge against corruption and social evils. "Your Chowkidar is standing firm & serving the nation. But, I am not alone. Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar. Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a Chowkidar. Today, every Indian is saying #MainBhiChowkidar," he tweeted from his official handle at 9am.
The tweet was accompanied with a 3.45-minute video, which starts with the PM addressing a rally and saying that their “chowkidar is absolutely alert.” The song then shows a montage of people across the country singing Main Bhi chowkidar hoon, and the visuals make references to a number of government schemes, including Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Digital India, Ujjawal Bharat, among others. It finally ends with an appeal to join Modi for a programme “Main Bhi Chowkidar” on March 31.
By 7pm, there were 4,50,000 tweets with the hashtag, and several users tweeted that they got a personalised reply from the PM’s handle thanking them for taking the pledge. The BJP has also launched official merchandise with the logo through official its NaMo page.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi also took to Twitter to respond to Narendra Modi’s campaign, asking if the Prime Minister was “feeling a little guilty today.” Gandhi’s tweet was accompanied by a picture of Modi with controversial businessmen Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi, among others.
Psephologist Yashwant Deshmukh called the social media campaign "one of the best in a long time."
"Arguably one if the best counter-campaigns one has seen in a long time. #ChowkidarChorHai Vs #MainBhiChowkidar: The election season Grand Finale has finally started, and how. Now waiting for the counter to this counter," he tweeted.
