EC eye on Holi parties

Bhubaneswar: With only a few days left for the festival of colours, political leaders and party workers of all hues are planning big celebrations with supporters and constituents. The chief electoral officer (CEO), however, will keep a close watch on the activities of political parties during Holi to rule out any violation of the model code of conduct.
Holi will be celebrated across the state on Friday.

“The model code of conduct does not prohibit celebration of religious festivals. But no political party or candidate can use the occasion to serve their political interests or for campaigning,” said additional chief electoral officer of the state, S R Yadav.

He said different teams of the CEO, including a videography team, would keep a record of the activities of parties and leaders.

“The candidates will have to adhere to provisions in the model code of conduct on organising public feasts or distributing liquor for free, giving speeches and alluring voters with any other means,” Yadav said.

“Meeting people is a day to day affair now. If people come to see us on a festival, what can we do?” wondered a BJP leader, requesting anonymity.
