KOLKATA: Two youths, including a BJP IT cell convener, were arrested on Saturday for allegedly posting derogatory remarks and images of Trinamool Congress’s Basirhat candidate Nusrat Jahan.

According to local sources, 30-year-old Suvendu Chakraborty, a resident of Baduria’s Laxminathpur, is BJP’s district (North 24 Parganas) IT cell convener. “A local Trinamool activist saw the post and lodged a complaint with Baduria police station,” a police officer said. Following the complaint, police picked up Chakraborty from his house and later produced him in a Basirhat court. “Two SIM cards and a memory card of the accused have been seized,” said an investigator.

Police have also arrested a youth, identified as Tanmay Bala from Gaighata’s Chandpara in North 24 Parganas, for allegedly making objectionable remarks on a social networking site against the actor-turned-politician.

BJP’s senior district leader and state committee member Shankar Chatterjee, however, claimed BJP activists were being falsely implicated. He also accused the police of favouritism. “The Trinamool Congress is desperately trying to malign the image of BJP Union ministers but police in Bengal don’t take any action.”

District Trinamool observer and assembly chief whip Nirmal Ghosh, however, said: “BJP is indulging in dirty politics even after the model code of conduct has come into effect. They are not only violating modesty of women candidates, they are also trying to create a ruckus across the state before the polls.”
