BHUBANESWAR: Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday announced its first list of seats for the Lok Sabha elections. Name of veteran communist leader Janardan Pati as a contestant from Bhubaneswar parliamentary constituency is in the list of 45 CPM candidates of the country.

In the national list, the party has mentioned only one Lok Sabha seat from Odisha. Earlier, party leader D Raja had announced here about grand alliance with Congress, CPI and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Even the alliance had decided to give one seat each to its alliances.

With this understanding, CPM got Bhubaneswar seat. Pati, former state head of the party, has never contested in any assembly or Lok Sabha elections before. “I will contest the election for the first time in my 50-year political career. I was not interested to get into electoral politics, but changed my decision after witnessing the dangerous situation created by the right-wing leaders and their supported government. We want to change the government,” said this 71-year-old left party leader.

Sivaji Patnaik from CPM had won three times from Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha seat in 1977, 1989 and 1991 by defeating Congress candidates. He had defeated Bipin Dash of Congress in 1, 45,346 votes in 1989. It was a bastion of communist party, but it lost the grip over the constituency later.

The party had won Bonai assembly seat only in 2014 election. “Slum votes play vital role in Bhubaneswar and we want to win confidence of slum dwellers,” said Pati.
