Hyundai’s venture into the compact performance segment began two years ago with the launch of the i30 N. Part of their N performance sub-brand, it’s a hot hatch aimed at the likes of the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
The lineup then grew to include the Veloster N and the i30 Fastback N.
The former was recently demonstrated at the company’s California Proving Grounds not long ago, on an improvised autocross course. The version that we see here is the Performance Package. It costs $29,000, excluding an $885 delivery fee, and adds a limited-slip differential with electronic control, sports exhaust system, bigger brakes and 19-inch wheels shod in Pirelli P Zero tires.

It also gets the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine in its top form, meaning that it has 271 HP (275 PS) instead of the base version’s 246 HP (250 PS). The unit is coupled to a six-speed manual transmission and returns 25 mpg US (9.4 l/100 km / 30 mpg UK) on average.
For a front-wheel drive car, the Veloster N attacks corners like a champ. Understeer kicks in later than expected, which once again proves just how much work Hyundai N’s engineers put into it.
