MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Friday agreed to hear PILs related to the condition of foot over-bridges in Mumbai on March 22. A day after the collapse of Himalaya bridge, Dadar resident Pradeep Bhalekar approached a bench of Justice Ranjit More and Justice Bharati Dangre for an urgent hearing of a PIL he had filed in the wake of the 2017 Elphinstone FOB stampede.
Advocate Nitin Satpute, counsel for the petitioner, informed the HC of the collapse. The PIL had urged the HC to order the state, BMC and railways to audit all bridges. It also sought registration of criminal cases against those responsible for upkeep of bridges and whose negligence caused the accidents.
Another application by activist Kamlakar Shenoy was mentioned before a division bench of Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice Nitin Jamdar. The bench asked Shenoy to file the application in the court registry. In his plea, Shenoy said this was the second major FOB collapse in the last one year—a portion of Gokhale bridge in Andheri collapsed on July 3, 2018. “My concern is for the millions of Mumbaikars using such FOBs... they pay adequate taxes from time to time,” said the application. Sources said other PILs were in the process of being drafted and would be filed in the next few days.
