LUCKNOW: A businessman was duped of Rs 3.25 lakh by a woman posing to be a wealthy Malaysian philanthropist through Facebook. The incident was reported to the cybercell on Friday.
The complainant, Satendra Singh of Kalyanpur, told police he had received a friend request on Facebook from one Hapsa Nadia Dafun in October. The two became friends over time and in December, Dafun sent him a message stating that her husband had died.
"She said her husband had wanted to donate $70,000 (Rs 48 lakh) to Indians and she wanted me to handover the money to people here," Singh said.
Dafun said the deal would be finalised by her husband's company GTP, based in UK.
"A company representative emailed me and took my address and bank details. On December 10, he called me up and asked me to deposit Rs 3 lakh in a government bank in New Delhi for getting custom clearance for dollars. I paid the money as directed," Singh said. Till January, he got no reply from GTP and aksed Dafun who told him to inquire from the company.
"When I wrote to GTP, they asked me to pay Rs 25,000 more to get the Rs 48 lakh and I did so," Singh said.
Ten days later, Dafun unfriended him and Singh then reported the matter to the police. Cybercell in charge Abhay Mishra said a case had been registered.
