The Periyanaickenpalayam police have registered a case against six persons who allegedly extorted ₹ 5 lakh from an astrologer after assaulting and threatening him.

The police said that the case has been registered against Kubendran, a resident of Therkupalayam, his wife Gayathri, relatives Pothyraj, Satheesh and two others based on a complaint filed by S. Balamurugan (33), an astrologer from Sivagangai.

According to the police, Kubendran and wife had consulted Balamurugan after they had financial problems. The astrologer reportedly informed them that they were undergoing a difficult time but astrological remedies were possible. He got ₹ 3,000 for the same and made a second visit to the house of Kubendran on Thursday to perform the remedies. As per the complaint filed by the astrologer, the six accused assaulted him and demanded money from him stating that “it was the best remedy.” He alleged that he had to pay ₹ 5 lakh as ransom to an aide of Kubendran to get released. Balamurugan was also allegedly threatened by the accused not to reveal the incident to the police.
