Bihar Congress authorises Rahul Gandhi to select candidates

PATNA: Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) on Friday unanimously authorised party’s national president Rahul Gandhi for selection of candidates for the coming Lok Sabha election in the state.
Congress is a partner in Bihar Mahagathbandhan of Lalu Prasad’s RJD, former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM(S), former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha’s RLSP and Nishad leader Mukesh Sahni’s Vikassheel Insaan Party.
The state Congress, in its resolution passed at its election committee meeting presided over by its chief Madan Mohan Jha here, thanked Rahul for his announcement to upgrade Patna University as a central university if his party comes to power at the Centre after 2019 polls. Rahul had made this announcement at the Congress’s rally in Patna on February 3 this year. In another resolution, the state Congress thanked people of Bihar and the Congress workers for coming from all parts of the state to make the rally a grand success.
Briefing newspersons after the meeting, BPCC’s media department head H K Verma said the election committee members also observed a two-minute silence in the memory of the CRPF jawans killed in the Pulwama terror attack.
Addressing the meeting, Congress incharge for Bihar Shakti Sinh Gohil requested the party’s senior leaders to select a block of their own choice and camp there till the completion of Lok Sabha elections to create an environment in favour of the party.
Congress legislature party (CLP) leader Sadanand Singh said the party has strengthened its base in Bihar, compared to 2014 elections, and hoped its candidate would win several seats this time.
Other prominent leaders who attended the crucial meeting were AICC secretary incharge for Bihar Birendra Singh Rathore, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, former Union minister Shakeel Ahmad, AICC secretary and Supaul MP Ranjit Ranjan, state Congress campaign committee chief Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Bihar Pradesh Mahila Congress chief Amita Bhushan, Youth Congress president Gunjan Patel and MLA Poonam Paswan.
