More than 3,000 advocates cast votes in repolling of Lawyers’ Assn election
tnn | Mar 17, 2019, 04:22 ISTKanpur: Out of 4,936 advocates, 3,624 cast their votes in repolling of the Lawyers' Association election held here on Saturday.
The polling was peaceful and advocates cast their votes in a disciplined manner.
“The polling percentage was 71.41 percent, which means that around two-third members took part in the election,” said returning officer, Vijay Narayan Sengar. The repoll was scheduled to be held on March 8 last but it was cancelled when some persons forced their entry inside the polling centre and had ransacked booth number 2,3 and 4.
They not only broke the ballot box but also looted and tore ballot papers. The voting, which was slow in the morning, geared up in the post-lunch session and was on peak in the last three hours when long queues could be seen at the entry point.
The returning officer ordered closure of the main gate at 5 pm as stipulated and allowed only those members to cast their votes who were inside the booth. In the presence of the former president and general secretary, the representatives of the contestants sealed the ballot boxes and placed them in the strong room. Counting will begin on Sunday, Sengar said.
