Assam guv informed of measures taken after hooch tragedy

Excise Parimal Friday called on to apprise him of the measures taken by his department following the hooch tragedy that claimed 158 lives in and districts in February.

The asked the to initiate awareness campaigns at all levels especially in the tea garden areas to empower people and ensure that spurious liquor was not brewed, an official release said.

Mukhi also said the State Anti-Drug and Prohibition Council must be reactivated to spread awareness activities and highlight the evil effects of liquor consumption.

The stated that not only 'sulai' but other intoxicating liquors also take a toll on human health.

He asked the minister to involve religious groups and NGOs for creating awareness on the evil effects of consuming 'sulai' or other liquors.

He also emphasised on organising debates and symposiums in educational institutions and motivational campaigns at public places like markets and bus stands, the release said.
