Kidney racket: 9th accused nabbed from Kidwainagar

Kanpur: Police on Friday arrested one more person in connection with the kidney racket that was busted in the city on February 17, taking the total number of arrests in the case to nine.
The ninth accused, Umar, was arrested from Kidwainagar area of the city on Friday morning. “Umar, resident of Chowk Mandi near Nizami Press, Patanala in Lucknow, too had donated his kidney before becoming a part of the international kidney racket. He had donated his kidney for a mere Rs 3.5 lakh to Sunil Kaul of Jalandhar. To avoid suspicion, Umar had got forged documents prepared in the name of Govinda Kaul, and introduced himself to the committee as Sunil’s son,” inspector Barra Atul Kumar Srivastava told TOI.

Following a specific tip-off, Umar was nabbed on Friday at around 11 am while he was attempting to lure a woman, one of the complainants, to withdraw case and settle score, the inspector added. According to police, besides getting the kidneys of two people transplanted, Umar had also got the liver of his uncle Raees transplanted for which which was given a big amount of money.

Initially, he came in contact with Junaid, one of the members of the gang, who is absconding.

Umar, who was under the police scanner following interrogation of eight persons arrested earlier, was identified with the interrogation of the middlemen in the racket, and teams were rushed to several hideouts across the state to track him down, the police said.


He was also one of the accused in a murder which took place outside Trivedi Mishthan Bhandar in Chowk area of Lucknow in 2015, and was later arrested and sent to jail. He come out of jail in October 2018 on bail and started working for the international kidney racket as he was running short of money, the police further said.


IT may be mentioned that the police, while busting the international kidney racket on February 17 in the city, had arrested Gaurav Mishra of Lakhimpur Kheri, T Rajkumar Rao of Kolkata, Shailesh Saxena of Badarpur (New Delhi), Saboor Ahmad of Kakori (Lucknow), Vicky Singh of Panki (Kanpur) and Shamshad Ali of Chowk (Lucknow).


On March 2, two more persons identified as Ramu Pandey and Shyam Tiwari were arrested from the city.
