Hours after the Himalaya bridge leading into Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus collapsed, claiming five lives, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday night announced compensation for the victims of the collapse as well as a high-level inquiry into the incident.

“₹5 lakh each will be paid to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 each to the injured, besides which all the medical expenses of the injured will be borne by the State government,” Mr. Fadnavis said. He also said that last year, a structural audit of the bridge was conducted and some minor repairs were recommended.

“The serious tragedy has raised questions on the audit report. A high-level committee will probe the matter and if the report was faulty, those responsible will be booked for culpable homicide. The government has taken very serious note of the incident,” Mr. Fadnavis said.
