Virus Research Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) upgrade in three medical colleges was announced to be completed within a period of six months in February 2018. However, even after a year, the project has not neared completion and officials said that the project is likely to come up in June this year.

The researchers on molecular diagnosis and research can be performed at the laboratories in the medical colleges once they are upgraded. Students depend on King’s Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research for research purposes now. VRDL would help the students to conduct researches on common viral diseases and their diagnosis within the institute. The project announced a merger of new facilities in the laboratories along with the existing facilities on viral research.
The samples for culture tests are sent to King’s Institute from medical colleges through the college labs for diagnostics and medical research as of now. VRDL laboratories facilitate medical research for regular viral diagnostics and viral outbreak investigation also.
“The project is going on and we will be able to complete the upgradation in Madras Medical College by June this year. The upgradation of the laboratory for viral research in Coimbatore Medical College was completed recently. The facilities are being purchased and negotiations on the funds for King’s Institute will be finalised soon and the project will take off,” said Director of Medical Education Dr Edwin Joe.
The laboratories in Madras Medical College, Salem Medical College and Tirunelveli Medical College were to be upgraded with the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) funds in the State. The King’s Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research was also to be upgraded at a cost of Rs 1.68 crore. However, the funds have not been released yet due to negotiation issues, said an official from Directorate of Medical Education.
