Deputy Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati said on Thursday that nine teams had been formed to look into various aspects of road safety including wearing of helmets by two-wheeler riders, fastening seat belts by drivers, stopping use of mobile phones while driving, and crossing roads. She was chairing the Road Safety Committee meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.
Ms. Korlapati said the teams would look into these aspects for nine months. Each team would focus on one aspect of road safety. They will create awareness on the importance of seat belts and helmets. Those not fastening seat belts will be given notices, she said.
People should be made aware of the importance of using public transport and bicycles. An annual list of requirements such as alcometres, speed guns, interceptors, and CCTV cameras should be drawn and later utilised.
Though CCTV cameras had been installed at several places, many were not working. The department that installed the cameras should also take care of maintenance. The Udupi municipality should see that the CCTV cameras installed by it are working, she said.
Officers should check the condition of bridges. Steps should be taken to ensure minors do not drive. Accidents should be analysed based on age and gender. School buses and three-wheelers should carry children according to the stipulated capacity. Steps will be taken to reduce accidents on highways, she said.
