KOLKATA: A day after the mishap in Mumbai that killed six people, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation authorities took a note of some of the rickety foot overbridges in the city.
A section of structural engineers are extremely worried about the stability of some of the bridges which need to go through a comprehensive testing for the safety of the commuters.
According to a KMC source, the civic body has already listed some foot overbridges as vulnerable.
“We have reasons to worry about the condition of foot overbridges at Sealdah, Rajabazar or Ultadanga. The KMC advertisement department has asked to remove hoardings from these and all other old foot overbridges to take load off these structures,” said a KMC official.
In fact, the KMC advertisement department has asked hoarding agencies to submit fitness certificates for these bridges which have been allotted to them for maintenance along with a right to display advertisements.
“A section of the agencies has started taking corrective measures to strengthen the structural stability of some bridges. But we can’t sit idle. We will send our team of engineers and see the condition of some rickety bridges on the spot,” said a KMC official.
A hoarding agency has already dismantled Dhakuria foot overbridge and will reconstruct it. Another agency will undertake necessary repair of Gariahat foot over bridge, said a KMC advertisement department official.
