Assam University holds 17th convocation

SILCHAR: Assam University Silchar held its 17th convocation here on Thursday. During the day, degrees were conferred on 5,395 stuents. Bindiya Singha, a graduate in Physics from Cachar College, bagged the best woman graduate award for securing the highest marks among all three streams. Central University of Tamil Nadu vice-chancellor, AP Dash inaugurated the convocation ceremony.


Delivering the convocation address, Dash said the last scientist to win the Nobel Prize for his work in India was CV Raman in 1930. Amartya Sen, S Chandrasekhar, Hargovind Khorana and Venkataraman Ramakrishnan, all of whom went on to be Nobel laureates, were graduates from Indian universities but won the prestigious award for their work in US universities, he added. "We must put in efforts to change this situation and for that we must begin to prioritize research in Indian universities," said the Central University of Tamil Nadu vice-chancellor.


He added that education imparted to the students at the universities should be relevant to their future lives.
