Days after Delhi Police arrested one person for robbing people after offering them shared cab rides in Gurugram and Delhi, the Gurugram police arrested two men who are part of a cabbie gang on Thursday night.

The arrested suspects have admitted to looting four people in the city so far, police said. “The arrested men used to change the registration plate of the car, a Vento, to avoid getting arrested,” in-charge of Sector 39 CIA unit Varun Kumar, whose teams made the arrest, said.

He added that the police have seized the car that had a fake registration plate on at the time of arrest, a lighter that looks like a pistol that the gang allegedly used to threaten victims to reveal their ATM PIN and a roll of tape used by the gang to gag the victims. Police said they were yet to ascertain the car’s ownership.

DCP (crime) Rajiv Deswal said, the arrests were made based on specific information about the gang’s movement.

Suspects, Sumit, 26, and Sandeep, 24, both from Ghaziabad, were arrested on Thursday night from DLF Phase 2 when they were looking for their next victim. Police are trying to nab a third gang member, who is on the run. Sumit was arrested last year in Delhi and formed the gang after he got out on bail in January, police said.

The DCP said that the accused used to trap people during morning and evening office hours. “The gang stayed in Ghaziabad and would trap people along the way in UP, Delhi and Gurugram,” Deswal said, adding that the suspects wore a mask while entering ATM kiosks to hide their identity.

On December 17, city police arrested a gang of four that allegedly robbed people after offering them shared cab rides on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. A similar gang was busted in January and earlier this week by the Delhi Police. Gurugram police said two to three more such gangs were still operating in the NCR.
