The by-polls to Manavadar, Dhrangadhra and Jamnagar Rural assembly seats, which fell vacant due to resignation of sitting MLAs, will take place on April 23, the same day as the Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, the Election Commission announced.

With this, polling will take place for 26 Lok Sabha seats, as well as five assembly seats on the same day.

"After taking into consideration various factors like festivals and electoral rolls, the Commission has decided to hold by-elections to these assembly constituencies to fill the vacancies," it said.

Manavadar in Junagadh fell vacant on March 8 after the surprise resignation of four-term Congress MLA Javahar Chavda. Chavda joined BJP the same day and was made a cabinet minister the next day.

Dhrangadhra seat in Surendranagar fell vacant after sitting MLA Parshottam Sabariya quit Congress, and joined BJP.

Dealing yet another blow to Congress in Saurashtra, Vallabh Dharaviya, MLA from Jamnagar Rural seat, had resigned earlier this week.

Earlier, the Commission had announced that by-polls to Unjha and Talala assembly seats, which fell vacant due to resignation of Asha Patel and disqualification of Bhaga Barad respectively, would take place on April 23. Barad has moved Gujarat High Court challenging his disqualification after he was convicted in a 24-year-old case of illegal mining.
