MUMBAI: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Friday ordered an inquiry into the foot overbridge collapse incident in which six persons were killed and over 30 injured.

The BMC commissioner ordered two inquiries, the report of one to be submitted within 24 hours.

The incident took place outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station in Mumbai on Thursday evening.

In the first inquiry, the civic chief engineer (CE) of the vigilance department has been asked to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within 24 hours identifying the municipal staff responsible and also the responsibility of the structural auditor into the incident.

Meanwhile, the chief engineer has also been asked to conduct an inquiry and submit another report within one month on the cause of the structural audit's failure of the bridge, status of the bridge maintenance and history of the repairs. The CE vigilance has also been asked to check whether the structural audit was carried out on time, in a scientific manner and whether the proper methodology was followed while appointing the structural auditor and his requisite qualifications and experience was seen.

The report also needs to look into the action taken against municipal staff on the audit recommendations and whether they had properly studied an analyzed report.
