Social media abuzz with 'loud blast' sounds in Amritsar

Many people in city claimed to have heard "loud blasts" in the wee hours of Thursday after which was abuzz with speculations.

A few people took to to write about two very loud sounds, which some said sounded similar to bomb blasts. However, police said "everything was okay" in the city and not to believe in "rumours" on

Walia, ADCP Amritsar, told ANI: "I appeal to the people to not believe in rumours on social media. Everything is okay. As per our information nothing has happened. "

On Twitter, people claimed "heightened air activity" in the city. Soon the hashtag surfaced with the conversation perking up about "sonic booms", "low flying jets" or just "loud sounds across the sky".

Most people reported the loud sounds around 1 am on Friday.

ADCP said it was merely chatter on social media and added: "We will investigate the matter. If there is something, we will let you know."
