Out on bail, IGP Umranangal’s degree now under SIT scanner

PATIALA: Two days after being released on bail by the District and session court of Faridkot in connection with the Behbal Kalan and Kotlkapura firing incidents, the IGP Paramraj Singh Umranangal is now facing a probe on the authenticity of his academic qualifications by the SIT.
A two member team of special investigation team (SIT) reached the premises of Punjabi University late evening on Wednesday. The SIT members conducted a probe into degrees obtained by Umranangal from Punjabi University.
The SIT carried out an investigation and ask the university authorities to submit the complete details of Umranangal who is learnt to have completed his graduation from the university.
It is learnt that Umranangal in the year 1985 86 had passed his graduation from the university. Sources in the university claimed that Umranangal had also got admission in the main campus of Punjabi University's law department but did not complete his LLB from the university and got migrated to some other University.
SIT head IGP Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh could not be contacted for comments despite repeated attempts.
Vice Chancellor Punjabi University Dr BS Ghuman also could not be contacted despite repeated attempts however the university registrar professor Manjit Singh Nijjar confirm the development and said that they had extended the cooperation to the SIT members who were conducting a probe into the qualifications of Umranangal. He said that whatever documents were sought by the investigators the university authority is had submitted them within no time. Nijjar claimed that team reached late evening on Wednesday and left the university around 8.0 pm
Umranangal was arrested by SIT on February 18 for his alleged lead role in the behbal Kalan and Kotkapura police firing incident that took place on October 14, 2015. Two Sikh youth were killed in the incident. A large number of Sikhs were protesting against the desecration of Shri Guru Granth Sahib.
Nine days after his arrest by SIT the IGP Umranangal was placed under suspension and later on was sent to central jail Patiala on 14 day judicial remand.
