The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) wrote to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Tuesday, calling upon it to allot plots of land at Sonia Vihar and Ghonda Gujran to the corporation to be used as landfill sites.
The EDMC had petitioned the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding handing over of the site in April last year. The Ghazipur landfill site where the corporation’s solid waste is currently dumped, is saturated. On March 8, the NGT had directed that the dispute between the departments should be resolved at the administrative level.
On Wednesday, a senior DDA official said: “The land at Ghonda Gujran will be handed over to the EDMC for setting up an alternative landfill site. Even though it is a part of the eco-sensitive zone, this is on a comparatively higher land, which is safer than other areas and it is not directly a part of the floodplain.”
The green tribunal was earlier informed that the two proposed sites have already been examined by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and found suitable for dumping.
