Gurgaon: A city court on Tuesday held a patwari (revenue official) of MCG guilty in a bribery case and sentenced him to five years in jail, along with Rs 25,000 fine. The case goes back to 2017, when the accused —Ajay Kumar — had sought a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant to transfer a plot of land, originally in the name of the complainant’s father.

Additional sessions judge Ashwani Kumar Mehta in his order held Kumar guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act. “On the basis of the investigation report and statements of witnesses, the court held him guilty and awarded imprisonment and imposed Rs 25,000 fine. If he fails to pay the fine, his imprisonment would increase by four more months,” Mehta said.

Public prosecutor Ramnivas Yadav said that the state vigilance bureau on April 7, 2017, caught the patwari red-handed while taking bribe. Kumar was arrested and sent to jail on Tuesday. tnn
