Rocklands residents were up in arms on Monday when a man, visibly injured, was arrested by police.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, the man can be seen lying on the ground and residents shouting at the police.

A resident can be heard saying: "They shot him in the head".

Western Cape police said the incident was taken "out of context".

Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said no shots were fired during the incident.

"Crime Prevention Unit members were busy on Heron Street when they approached a group of men, who fled upon the arrival of SAPS," he said.

"One of the suspects, a 43-year-old male resisted arrest and, in the process, sustained a cut to his head."

Traut added that the man was arrested and had received treatment at a hospital, before being discharged. 

In a separate video, the man - with a bandage on his head, at what looks like a police station - is asked if he was shot. "I wasn’t shot," he says.

Traut said the suspect was arrested on charges of possession of mandrax, resisting arrest and assault of a police officer.
