Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday gave a call to the Congress and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) to tie-up with AAP in Haryana to defeat the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Leaders of Congress party and the JJP, however, made it clear that the possibility of an alliance between AAP, the JJP and the Congress was unlikely in Haryana.
Mr. Kejriwal told reporters in New Delhi that if the three parties — the Congress, the JJP and AAP come together then the BJP would not win any of the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana.
‘Confident of win’
“Congress president Rahul Gandhi should consider an alliance with AAP and the JJP in Haryana in order to beat the BJP,” he said. He, however, added that in Delhi the AAP was capable of winning all seven Lok Sabha seats on his own.
Mr. Kejriwal’s remark came in the backdrop of speculation of an alliance between AAP and the Congress for Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.
Later, Mr. Kejriwal in a tweet, said the people of the country wanted to defeat the “duo of Amit Shah and Modiji” and if the JJP, AAP and the Congress contest together, then BJP will lose all 10 seats in Haryana. He added that Mr. Gandhi should think about this.
Dismissing the suggestion of an alliance with the Congress, JJP’s national General Secretary K.C. Bangar in a statement, said “The JJP will never have any alliance with the Congress. JJP’s ideology is based on late Choudhary Devi Lal, who fought against the Congress.”
Ideological difference
“JJP’s ideology does not match with the Congress and therefore, the JJP will not be a part of any alliance in which Congress is a member,” said Mr. Bangar.
Congress party also dismissed the need for an alliance in the State.
Haryana Congress president Ashok Tanwar said there is no need for the Congress party to have any alliance in Haryana for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
“The Congress is on a strong footing in Haryana and is capable of winning all the 10 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party does not have any existence in Haryana. And as far as the JJP is concerned, they are yet to prove its mettle in the electoral fray,” Mr. Tanwar told The Hindu.
Earlier this year, AAP had supported the JJP candidate in the by-election to the Jind seat in the Haryana Assembly. Sources in the two parties had said talks were on for an alliance for the Lok Sabha elections as well.
