BSP-SP, BJP spar over farm distress in Jewar
Meenakshi Sinha | TNN | Mar 14, 2019, 08:00 ISTGreater Noida: The BSP-SP alliance on Wednesday hit out at BJP-led state and central governments over its “anti-youth and anti-farmer policies”, a charge rejected by the ruling party.
On Tuesday, the district BSP wing also filed a complaint with the district election commission against the ruling BJP for having filed more than 22,000 fake voter applications without valid documents. The BJP rejected the allegation.
The alliance candidate from Gautam Budh Nagar, Satveer Nagar, along with party workers, visited about two dozen villages in Jewar assembly constituency, including Rabupura, Rohi, Ranhera, Chhitar, Mohammadpur Janda, Uttrawali, Hajipur, Nangla Shahpur, Birampur and Nangla Ganeshi, to establish direct contact with villagers and farmers.
“I took an extensive tour of about two dozen villages in Jewar Vidhan Sabha (assembly) constituency where farmers’ anger against the current government was paramount. There is all-round neglect with no policies favouring them (farmers),” said Nagar. “From making Gautam Budh Nagar a district to providing colleges in the region, everything was done by BSP supremo Mayawati. Even all infra-development projects were launched by the BSP and SP governments for which the BJP government is taking credit,” he added.
The BJP MLA from Jewar, Dhirendra Singh, denied these claims. “Satveer ji is free to say whatever he likes, but there’s no truth in those words. Reality is that it was the BJP government which implemented the 15% increase in minimum support price as per the Swaminathan report (on farmers’ distress). The debt of 36,000 farmers was waived by the present government while policies like Kisan Samman Yojna were implemented,” Singh said.
“Their claim of injustice to farmers is completely false. On the contrary, it was under BSP rule that farmers were lathi-charged brutally at Bhatta Parsol,” he told TOI.
Singh said the Jewar airport project was given the go-ahead by his government. “The near Rs 80,000-crore investment in the project is historic. The youth of the region will benefit by way of employment opportunities,” said Singh.
